The In-between

The first painting in this body of work was one of those pieces that “just happened” because I was willing to follow my curiosity. The finished piece reminded me of the mid-century abstract expressionist Barnett Newman. I was struck by Jonathan FIneberg’s words about the artist in Art Since 1940 Strategies of Being: “Newman was after an epiphany, a simultaneously terrifying and exalting moment of total reality.”

I began thinking about the stripe, or in Newman’s terms the “zip” as a space in-between, or a liminal space.  It is a space of both totality and of absolute void, where the possibility of oneness can be found when moving between two distinct entities.
